2017 Toyota 86 vs 2017 Ford Mustang
Since the announcement that Scion would be closing its doors and some of its more popular models would be coming into the Toyota fold, we’ve been extremely excited to see what would come of the Scion FR-S. Now that the 2017 Toyota 86 has arrived, we’re extremely excited about the finished product. So excited, in fact, that we thought we’d see how it measures up to one of the most iconic sports cars in history: the 2017 Ford Mustang.
Advantages of the 2017 Toyota 86
The table above shows how comparable the two sporty coupes are to one another, but also shows advantages right where someone might’ve anticipated them to be. Starting with the top row, the Toyota 86 utilizes nearly 2 litres less fuel to drive the same 100 kilometres as the Ford Mustang. Moving onto the highway, the iconic pony car steps things up quite a bit, limiting the 86’s efficiency advantage to just 0.3 l/100km. But that’s obviously not enough to tip fuel economy back in its favor, so a big advantage of the Toyota 86 is the cash you’ll save at the pump over time.
However, as one might’ve assumed, the Mustang fires right back by delivering an extra 95 horsepower than the 86. That’s a pretty substantial advantage, especially between two sports cars, however everything might not be as it seems. The final row of the table above shows curb weight, which is how much the vehicle weighs in and of itself. Considering the 86 weighs a whopping 752 lbs. lighter than the Mustang, the Ford pony’s advantage in horsepower is severely diminished.
There’s no way to tell just how much the advantage is worn down, so the Mustang still gets the nod in power, but the lightweight nature of the Toyota 86 definitely gives it a run for its money in terms of fun-to-drive.
