2016 Toyota Prius vs 2016 Chevy Volt
1997 was a massive year, not just for the Toyota Motor Co. but for the automotive market as a whole. It was the year Toyota introduced its first production vehicle equipped with a full hybrid-technology drivetrain, and it completely changed the game. Its newest version has also begun looking to break the negative stigma that the Prius is an awkward-looking, slow-moving vehicle that happens to get good fuel efficiency. No longer does it sacrifice looks or power to deliver superior fuel efficiency, instead now it does all of those things.
The Chevy Volt on the other hand is one of the most popular mainstream all-electric vehicles on the market, so we thought we’d measure up the two vehicles to see how exactly they differ. To do that, we compared the 2016 Toyota Prius vs 2016 Chevy Volt.
Advantages of the 2016 Toyota Prius
Starting at the top with power, the 2016 Chevy Volt unsurprisingly trumps the Prius by way of 28 horsepower. But the 2016 Toyota Prius fires back with sits near 500-pound advantage in terms of curb weight, weighing hundreds of pounds less and thus diminishing the horsepower advantage that the electric Volt has.
Space is another area that the 5-door hatchback 2016 Toyota Prius trumps its competitor the Chevy Volt. While the Volt could be considered a hatchback too, it doesn’t offer the space that generally comes with that designation, instead having a trunk that is only 10.6 cu. ft., making it difficult to compete with the 24.6 cu. ft. cargo hold of the Prius.
As we stated, the 2016 Toyota Prius has some of the best efficiency on the Market, and its 4.5 l/100km combined fuel economy rating goes a long way to prove that. The 2016 Chevy Volt fires back with 5.7 l/100km, but when operating on all-electric it has a 102 MPGe, which is far superior. But operating on all-electric severely inhibits the distance you can drive.
