2016 Scion FR-S vs 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata
As you’ve likely heard by now, the Scion brand has been discontinued. Lucky for FR-S fans, it has been stated that it will be picked up and rebadged by Toyota for the 2017 model year, so we haven’t seen the last of the quick little sports car. For the 2016 model year however, it is still a Scion, and we thought we’d see how the sports car stacks up against one of the most popular convertibles in Canada, by comparing the 2016 Scion FR-S vs 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata. In the end, we’ll get a better idea of which vehicle is superior, at least in certain aspects.
Advantages of the 2016 Scion FR-S
For starters, looking at the table above makes it immediately obvious that the Scion FR-S is the powerhouse of the pair, offering 45 extra horsepower which would definitely be noticeable in back-to-back test drives. But the Miata fires back by offering slightly superior fuel efficiency, operating on 0.4 litres less fuel per 100 kilometres on the highway. But if that slight advantage isn’t enough to sway you to the Mazda camp, then, the next two rows will have you firmly standing behind the 2016 Scion FR-S.
As sports cars, neither has a very expansive trunk, but an extra 3.3 cu. ft. goes a long way when dealing with such confined spaces. That amount of space might be just what the driver of the FR-S needs, and had they been driving a Miata they wouldn’t be able to bring along whatever it was. Additionally, the Scion FR-S has a passenger volume of 83.4 cu. ft. We don’t know how spacious the interior of the Miata is. Of course, being able to drop the top will make it seem much roomier, but in the winter when you can’t drop it, a bit more space will certainly be welcomed.
