Today we thought we’d look at something fun and even a little scientific, by diving into something that is gaining traction as the market turns more and more toward sporty models: Vortex Generators. Big in the field of aerospace and very common in racecars, vortex generators are a piece of technology that increase the aerodynamics of a vehicle. They’ve been found on vehicles for several years, but are becoming more popular now, even being found on the 2017 Toyota Camry.

What is a Vortex Generator?
So, what exactly is a vortex generator? Have you ever seen little things that look like shark fins running across the back of a vehicle’s roof? Those are just one example of vortex generators, but they are little objects that work to better redirect the flow of air around a vehicle, thus improving the engine’s efficiency.
As the flow comes in, the generators create vortices that work to better utilize the flow of air, so that the vehicle cuts through it better. As a result, your vehicle won’t move or shake around quite as much, and will meet less wind resistance. Hopefully this gives you a better understanding of how vortex generators work, and the small boosts that they give vehicles like the 2017 Toyota Camry. As Kyle mentions in the video, they don’t work quite as well on road cars as they do on racecars, but there is still a subtle improvement.
