How does SmartDeviceLink work?
In today’s How’s This Work we’re going to look at a technology that you might have heard of, but it isn’t exactly widespread. It was just released in April of this year, so it hasn’t made its way into many vehicles yet, but we imagine it will explode in popularity once it starts making its way into more vehicles. The technology in question is called SmartDeviceLink, an infotainment software originally created by Ford and recently adopted by Toyota and other manufacturers around the market.

What is SmartDeviceLink?
Essentially, SmartDeviceLink is a piece of software implemented into a vehicle’s display audio infotainment system that wraps tons of different infotainment interfaces into one in an effort at standardizing the technology across the market. So basically, SmartDeviceLink is a telematics technology that will enable programs like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto among others. The goal of SmartDeviceLink is two-fold. Not only will it make things easier for drivers and passengers to operate their infotainment system, but it will make mobile app developers’ lives easier as well.
We don’t know much else about SmartDeviceLink at this time, though the video below might help you understand it a bit further. Any other information currently available probably wouldn’t be all that important anyways, as it is a deeper look into the technical side of things, which we as drivers and passengers don’t really care about. The important thing is that very soon Toyota vehicles will allow you to connect your mobile devices to your infotainment system much easier.
