How does Remote Engine Start work?
Tuesday marked the final Used Car Spotlight of April, and now it’s Thursday – which means it’s time for the last How’s This Work of the month. Last week we looked at the Smart Key System, so we figured we’d stick in the same realm this week by looking at the Remote Engine Starter. There are all kinds of remote engine starters out there, even cheap ones you can install yourself. But often, none of them will work as well as factory-installed remote starters.

Essentially, a remote engine starter is designed to allow you to start your vehicle while you’re still in the house. It’s great for the freezing winters we have here, as you can start the car early and let the interior warm up while you get ready. Some systems get really advanced and detailed, allowing you to use a smartphone or similar device to set all kinds of things. They differ from brand to brand, but for Toyota vehicles here in Canada you can opt for START +, which we’ll touch on briefly.
What is Toyota START +?
Toyota START + is available in many Toyota vehicles here in Edmonton, and it works just like regular remote engine starters. The difference is that it lets you do more than simply start the engine, and on top of that it works from roughly 800 metres away – much further than most generic remote starters.
But as we mentioned, START + offers plenty of other features, including: 2-way light and sound feedback, ventilation and air conditioning control, automatic heating, front and rear defoggers control and of course a low-battery indicator. These features make it easy to set your car up just how you want it, whether in the winter or the summer, all very easily using your key fob.
If you have any other questions about how Toyota START + or generic remote engine start systems work, feel free to give us a call. You can watch the video below for a more detailed introduction to Toyota START +, and we’d be happy to give you a list of Toyota vehicles that come with Toyota START + installed!
