How does Wireless Charging work?
For this week’s How’s This Work, we’ve decided to take a step back from constantly looking at driver-assistive safety features to look at something a little different. In our opinion, one of the coolest features starting to pop up not just in a lot of our Toyota vehicles but across the whole market has to be wireless charging for Qi-enabled cell phones and other devices. Many vehicles are now installing a standard Qi charging station, allowing you to get rid of all those chords that let you charge your phone on the go.

What is Qi Wireless Charging?
Qi has become a globally-recognized standard in the technology field for wirelessly charging a number of portable devices. Many of today’s cell phones and similar devices are now being built with Qi technology enabled off the bat, but you can also make many devices Qi enabled after the fact as well. When a device is Qi enabled, it allows you to charge your device by simply leaving it on a Qi charging station – which is what vehicles are now offering as a standard or available feature.
Many vehicles, like the Toyota Camry, now have a built-in Qi charging station placed somewhere in the center console, often right underneath the display audio screen. All you have to do is make sure your device is Qi enabled, and then set it right on the charging pad to give your phone new life. There’s generally a switch to turn the charging station on and off, so check that the charging indicator is lit up to be sure that your device is getting juice.
You can watch the video below for a better example of how the Qi wireless charging station works, just note that the video talks about an older model so the appearance of the charging station might be different in your newer vehicle. If you’d like to know which vehicles we offer have a Qi wireless charging station available, feel free to give us a call!
