What’s better AC or windows down?
When it’s summer you will probably start using features in your vehicle that haven’t been operated in a while. Two of these features include your air conditioning and your windows. You would never dream of using these features in the winter (with the exception of going through the drive-thru). There are many benefits to both features, but what’s better AC or windows down?
There are many debates that revolvedaround this heated topic. There are a number of drivers that fall on both sides of the discussion. One commonly discussed issue is fuel efficiency. Which one of these features actually uses more fuel to function? A while ago, the popular television show “Mythbusters”, put both of these features to the test. They used the two identical SUVs and drove around Northern California’s Altamont Raceway at 45 miles (72 kilometers) per hour. One drove with all the windows down, while the other drove with the AC cranked. In the end, the SUV with the windows down traveled 15 miles (24 kilometers) more. This proves that traveling with the windows down is more fuel efficient, but does that mean it’s still the best choice?
There are a number of other important factors to take into consideration. For example, driving on the highway with the windows down can be extremely distracting. It is loud and does a poor job of actually circulating air. Air conditioning on the other hand provides cool air instead of humid air. It also manages to filters pollutants and airborne particles that help keep the air in the car stay fresh. Air conditioning also helps provide a pleasant and odour free environment.
As you can see there are many benefits to driving with the windows down or with the AC on. It all depends on where you’re headed and what is most important for you and your passengers.
